Our office, on behalf of the Native Women’s Transition Centre, has developed three distinct facilities, staged over 7 years, which address a non-institutional approach to transitional housing and administrative services for women with children experiencing a social transition. Phase 1 emphasized secure housing, life skill development and individual social counseling. The centre was designed with modest living accommodation for expected stays of 6 to 8 months.
Phase 2 development focused on secure housing and independent living. Emphasis was placed on the individual becoming integrated into society with the newly established life skills and self esteem. The centre was designed as a traditional low rise apartment complex for expected stays of 1 to 2 years.
Phase 3 is a Healing Centre which reflects upon the aboriginal tradition of communal healing. This project completed the integration of current means of addressing social issues with traditional concepts of healing.
