This project included the renovation of a commercial space to accommodate a pharmacy and medical clinic. The plan includes dispensary and retail areas, as well a conference room equipped for training of fellow pharmacists, medical practitioners, and for community awareness lectures on health and well-being. It includes an open work area and space for expansion of the growing business aspirations. The design includes a typical counter counseling area and a fully private counseling room for administering inoculations and specialized treatments, offering a space where the client can have private conversations with their pharmacist regarding their personal health and well-being.
The many design challenges included the owner’s requirement to share a portion of the building with a medical clinic, requiring our design to satisfy the security requirements and regulations of both the Pharmaceutical Association and the College of Physicians. We were tasked with the challenge of securing inventory, personal files, incorporating shared program space, all the while satisfying the integrated, yet autonomous, relationships required by each association.
Upon entry to the building, the glass vestibule and glazed partition wall immediately exposes the amenities available within to the visitor – inviting the client in and creating a visual connection throughout the space. The resulting space has the feel of ‘downtown loft’ meets ‘corporate office’. The use of glass partitions with sliding doors, sophisticated materials and graphics, modern lounge areas and a unique solution to inventory storage, distinguishes this pharmacy from the everyday pharmaceutical experience; all this, paired with the bold use of colour and pattern, immediately tell the client they are somewhere special.
